So who is this for?

As a science communication conference, the SCI-COM-E meeting is intended for professionals in science communication who want to get new insights, meet fascinating people and expand their network in Europe and beyond.

The programme of three days and two social evenings is mainly driven by the community. In addition we invite all student participants from the European Summer School on Science Communication to join the SCI-COM-E meeting.

SCI-COM-E 2026 officially begins on 23 September at 2 pm. The professional meeting is a community-driven event. You can (and should) contribute to the programme! We try to accommodate as many contributions as we can, so please send us a short abstract (max 200 words) by e-mail.

The conference fee is 325€. Whilst lunch is self-organised and participant-funded, all coffee breaks and the conference dinner are included in the fee. We will send an invoice with your given details and once paid you are registered for the whole event.

Robert Jasko: Formable Knowledge Architecture: Building Scientific Models in DGS Signing Space

Two hands can build a solar system: one holds the planet steady, the other shapes orbit, scale, and motion around it. This talk presents formable knowledge architecture (formbare Wissensarchitektur), a design principle for STEM signs in German Sign Language (DGS), developed within my doctoral research at Universität Hamburg.
Signing space works as a four-dimensional model space — three spatial axes plus time, articulated through movement, gaze, and sequence. Stable reference points, such as the non-dominant hand as buoy or ground, and moveable relations, such as figure, jointly produce recognizable, manipulable forms of knowledge. Recurring anchor handshapes across sign families create familiarity through conceptual reference: the form is new, the reference is familiar.
The epistemic function of the principle is revisability: a knowledge form held visibly in shared space can be jointly reshaped, precisely where understanding calls for it. Established building blocks — buoys, real-space blends, depiction, and conceptual blending — meet here in a new synthesis: a design principle for STEM sign development, formulated for DGS for the first time.
I develop and demonstrate the model from a Deaf, neurodivergent research perspective: interwoven thinking shaped it, and signing space itself will carry the presentation — live.

Matthew Barwick: Communicating pharmacovigilance visually – a filmmaker’s perspective

Uppsala Monitoring Centre (UMC) is an independent, self-funded, non-profit foundation established in 1978, dedicated to the safer use of medicines and vaccines worldwide. 

In this talk Matthew will explore his work in the organisation as a filmmaker with a background in humanitarian communication; the challenge of communicating UMC’s mission, activities, and the science of pharmacovigilance visually. It will touch on visual storytelling, cross-cultural communication, and behaviour change communication with a focus on a selection of UMC communication projects. 

AKANoah student team (Lorenzo Delpiano, Natalia Giovanna): Communicating Science: From Understanding to Storytelling

Effective climate action requires environmental education beyond traditional pedagogies. AkaNoah, a student-led team from Politecnico di Torino, addresses this through an experiential, story-driven approach to science communication. We translate complex ecological and engineering concepts into relatable narratives, turning passive learning into active discovery. This presentation shares our methodology, offering practical insights into making sustainability accessible for youth.
Our initiatives illustrate this philosophy. “Word Flow,” a team-designed boardgame, translates ecological concepts into playful mechanics. Meanwhile, an upcoming educational podcast transforms science communication using humor and engaging language to make well-informed science truly resonate with a younger audience.
At the core of our approach lies the integration of rigorous scientific theory with hands-on, gamified experimentation. Our modules include collaborative outdoor activities along Turin’s Po River followed by guided reflection. By challenging students to articulate observed phenomena, we help them grasp sustainability concepts while building critical thinking and communication skills.
Together, these initiatives aim to empower younger generations to become active, eco-conscious participants in the sustainability conversation.

Henrike Jungeblut: Books & Brains: What books can teach us about psychology and the brain

Books & Brains is an English-language online science communication platform that reviews novels and short stories on biopsychological topics. Full-length book reviews are published on a blog website. Each review critically examines the featured book’s narrative to distinguish evidence-based science from fictional or speculative elements. A key objective is to present complex biopsychological concepts in an accessible and engaging manner. The articles use clear language, while providing references to the underlying research and highlighting uncertainties or contradictions where they exist.
The project targets non-specialist readers with an interest in psychology and literature. By using fiction as an entry point for discussing science, the project aims to reach an audience that may not have been exposed to biopsychology before. Readers are encouraged to reflect critically on how science is represented in popular narratives and to engage more deeply with biopsychological content.
Dissemination is achieved through social media. Followers are encouraged to read the featured book or short story and engage with guided questions, polls, or short explanations of key concepts. This shall foster anticipation, discussion, and active participation, thereby mimicking the experience of a book club. At the same time, the social media channels build on the “Bookstagram” and “BookTok” trend by using books as a “hook” to capture attention and actively channel this interest toward the blog website.
Finally, with Books & Brains, I hope to spark curiosity in others and to lower the barrier between enjoying great stories and understanding the science behind them.

Judith Gabel: Science Communication at the Museum: The Science Communication Lab at Deutsches Museum München

While science and technology museums excel at showcasing historical achievements, communicating contemporary research at such a museum presents a unique challenge. To bridge this gap, the Deutsches Museum in Munich launched the Science Communication Lab alongside its permanent exhibitions. Moving away from static exhibits, the Science Communication Lab prioritizes active dialogue between researchers and the public. Through collaborative partnerships, scientific groups interact directly with visitors to share their ongoing work. This talk provides context on museum work, outlines some of the communication formats tested, and presents key insights and learnings from our science communication efforts in the museum.

Slimene Sedrette: Bridging Research and Society, the Role of Science Centers in Tunisia

Science communication is essential for strengthening scientific literacy, fostering public engagement, and building trust between research and society. In Tunisia, science communication has developed through the combined efforts of universities, research institutions, civil society organizations, and science centers, which play an important role in making science accessible to diverse audiences.
This presentation provides an overview of the science communication landscape in Tunisia, with a particular focus on the contribution of science centers and institutions dedicated to scientific culture. It will highlight a wide range of activities, including interactive exhibitions, educational workshops, science festivals, public lectures, and outreach programmes designed to engage citizens, especially young people, with science, technology, and innovation.
Beyond traditional outreach approaches, the Monastir Science Palace is increasingly adopting innovative educational methodologies that promote active learning, creativity, and problem-solving. Within the framework of European-funded cooperation initiatives promoting Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) and public engagement, projects such as MEDNIGHT (Mediterranean Researchers’ Night) and SWAFY (Science With And For Youth) strengthen collaboration between researchers, educators, science communicators, and youth. Through SWAFY, it is integrating STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) learning approaches into school science clubs, transforming them into creative spaces for experimentation, innovation, and scientific inquiry.
Finally, the presentation will discuss the main challenges and future perspectives for developing a sustainable, inclusive, and innovative science communication ecosystem in Tunisia. By sharing the Tunisian experience, it aims to contribute to the international dialogue on how science centers can bridge the gap between research and society, support new models of science education, and foster a stronger culture of science among future generations.

Mikolt Dajka: Young Researchers as Science Communicators: Bridging the Gap Between Research and Secondary Education

Science education in the Hungarian public education system is still largely based on the transmission of factual knowledge, while students have limited opportunities to experience scientific inquiry, develop critical thinking, or encounter researchers and research in an authentic way. Consequently, science often appears distant and inaccessible, despite the growing need for educational approaches that foster curiosity, creativity, and active engagement with scientific challenges. This presentation introduces SCUP (Science + start-UP), a grassroots science communication initiative founded by young researchers that has evolved into a non-governmental organisation with a nationwide impact. Developed by university students, PhD candidates, and early-career researchers, SCUP represents a novel science communication methodology that bridges the gap between the research community and secondary education. Rather than bringing simplified scientific content into classrooms, the programme brings the research mindset itself closer to students through direct interaction with young scientists and authentic research-inspired challenges.
The SCUP methodology is built around project-based workshops in which secondary school students work in small teams on real scientific and societal problems under the guidance of trained young researcher mentors. Acting as facilitators rather than lecturers, mentors encourage students to formulate ideas, collaborate, think critically, and present innovative solutions to a professional jury. The programme aims to position students as active participants in scientific thinking rather than passive recipients of knowledge, while simultaneously strengthening problem-solving, communication, teamwork, and self-confidence.
Since its launch, SCUP has delivered approximately 150 workshops in more than 60 secondary schools, reaching nearly 4,000 students across Hungary and beyond. Evaluation data consistently highlight the importance of peer-like mentors,
collaborative learning, and authentic scientific challenges in increasing students’ engagement with science. By presenting SCUP as a case study, this talk explores how a science communication methodology developed by young researchers can serve as an effective bridge between academia and public education, fostering scientific literacy, inspiring future researchers, and demonstrating the societal value of science through active participation.

Jackson Ainsworth: Resetting the nuclear agenda: Notes from nuclear energy communications

In 2023, the Canadian government launched the “Enabling Small Modular Reactors” Program to support research and development related to emerging SMR technologies. Through the program, Natural Resources Canada provided $5 million to the SAFE-T project, a multi-institutional research initiative examining the operation and disposal of TRISO (Tri-structural Isotropic) fuel, which is used in many advanced reactor designs. In this paper, I reflect on my experience as communications lead for the SAFE-T project and the science communication lessons that emerged in conveying highly technical information in a publicly sensitive space. These include, 1. communicating across disciplines. SAFE-T brings together researchers working in materials science, modelling, criticality safety, waste disposal and data management. Translating between these groups is itself a science communication challenge. 2. The need to adapt project messaging as scientific findings change, and how the co-constitutive relationship between communications and research evolves over a project lifespan. 3. The challenge of communicating research within a shifting political and policy environment. The result is a negotiation of frames within a contextual model that is both unfamiliar with TRISO fuel and SMRs, while also having deep knowledge of other nuclear energy technologies and politics.

Sandra Rybicki: When Communication Becomes a Conversation: Reflections from Greenland

During outreach activities with children and communities in Greenland, I realized that the most meaningful conversations often began after I stopped explaining. Participants shared their own observations, experiences, and questions about marine ecosystems, shifting the activities from communicating science to exploring it together.
Since then, I have found myself asking a different question. Rather than viewing illustrations and educational materials primarily as tools for explaining research outcomes, could they become tools for dialogue? Could they help create opportunities for curiosity, participation, and co-creation throughout a project, rather than only communicating its results?
This question is also shaped by a broader challenge I have encountered in collaborative research, where engaging local communities and different knowledge systems is increasingly encouraged, yet meaningful dialogue can be difficult to achieve within existing project structures. I am interested in exploring whether visual and tactile communication can help support these conversations from the outset.
This presentation shares an ongoing exploration rather than a finished approach. Using examples from Greenland and current ideas for interactive learning experiences, I hope to exchange experiences with others working in science communication. I’m particularly interested in learning what has worked, what has not, and where opportunities for future collaboration might lie.
